If you don't upgrade characters then you will fall behind on resource generation and it will take forever to complete resource missions. Knowing this you will just not upgrade characters until the mission appears, right? They thought of that. They control what rewards you get and will purposely give you cards you don't need until you've hit a certain amount of time played. You either have to wait for the free lootbox to refresh and pray you'll get enough upgrade cards, or hope you can buy character cards with research and hope you have enough research to upgrade them. Because free cards only come out of loot boxes, and free loot boxes only come out of completing missions, eventually you will reach a point where the only mission you have left is upgrading characters. Every time you upgrade a character you need twice as many cards as last time. One of the missions requires you to upgrade characters, to upgrade characters you need research and character upgrade cards.

While you can buy Science with Gold, you really don't have to, because you earn a lot, like, A LOT just by playing. The support code is a code given to you by the developers. In those loot boxes you can find Gold (currency you buy directly with real money), Science (used to upgrade cards) and the cards themselves. You earn loot boxes (stop, don't freak out just yet!) with each mission, so you get like 10 of them each prestige, which is a lot. The way things cost now is more in line with Swarm Simulator, you need the previous resource and Comrades (equivalent to "larvae" in SwarmSim) which makes it way clearer on what to work on and how to progress.
